If ductwork is the plumbing of an air system, the coil and blower assembly is the pump and the filter combined, and it is where the measurable performance losses actually occur. A blower wheel with a few millimetres of caked dust on each fin loses a substantial fraction of its rated airflow, because the fin profile that moves the air is no longer the shape the engineer designed. An evaporator coil with a fouled face does the same thing at the other end of the cabinet, while simultaneously running warmer, dehumidifying less effectively and shortening compressor life. Homeowners feel this as rooms that will not cool and a system that runs continuously, then usually call for duct cleaning, which is the wrong service for that symptom.
This category is separated out because it is a distinct scope with distinct competence requirements. Pulling and cleaning a blower wheel properly means removing the assembly, which means disconnecting wiring and, on many units, working around a variable-speed motor and control board that will not tolerate a pressure washer or careless solvent. Cleaning an evaporator coil means getting at both faces, which frequently requires cutting and re-sealing an access panel on an upflow cased coil, and means using a cleaner appropriate to the metallurgy. Aluminium micro-channel coils and traditional copper-and-aluminium fin coils do not tolerate the same chemistry.
What to look for when comparing companies here is straightforward. Ask whether the blower wheel is cleaned in place or removed. In-place cleaning is faster and cheaper and does not get the inner fin surfaces, which is where the deposit lives. Ask what happens to the condensate drain pan and line, since a coil cleaning that flushes debris into an already-marginal drain is how you get a water damage claim a week later. Ask for photographs of the wheel and the coil face before and after, for the same reason you would ask for duct footage.
In the humid Gulf and Florida markets in this directory, coil condition is very often the actual root cause behind a call about smells or visible growth at supply registers. In the dry western markets it is more often a straightforward airflow and efficiency question. Either way, this is the part of the system where competent work produces a difference you can measure on a manometer rather than one you have to take on faith.
